The Vault

The Vault is a password manager hosted by XR. Having a password manager is the number one thing that you can do to secure your accounts online so we really recommend joining it!

What is a password manager?

A password manager is a tool that lets you store all of your passwords together in a safe place. Instead of having to remember hundreds of passwords for all of the accounts you've created over the years, you only need to remember one: the master password to your password vault. You can then have different passwords to all of your online accounts that are practically impossible for a hacker to guess (e.g. cj*XknvKPgg9b5).

You might be thinking:

But isn't having only one password for everything much less safe?! If someone guesses my master password then they'll have access to everything!

This is totally true. If you want to store the passwords to your bank in a safe or under a floorboard that makes total sense. However, what about the passwords to your other online accounts? To your email? To your social media accounts? To online shopping sites? If you're not using a password manager the chances are that you're using only a handful of passwords to access all these sites and if an attacker manages to guess it then they could cause a lot of mayhem.

But my password is totally unique. Nobody could ever guess it.

You would be surprised. Hackers have access to enormous databases of the most commonly used passwords and can try them all. Take a look at this page for a list of some of the most common passwords that people use. Is yours there? Even if it isn't a hacker could still steal the password from a dodgy website that hasn't secured the passwords properly. Even the huge tech company Yahoo messed this up.

"But I don't care about those websites. I have nothing important on them."

All accounts have some level of personal information on them. Just think about how many times you have told a website your address and phone number. Now the hacker has them. Password managers are essential to help avoid identity theft

Also, some accounts are more important than you might think. For example, if an attacker gets access to your email account, then by using the Reset Password button that many websites have, they can reset those passwords and access the accounts.
